The King Hamad Chair for Inter-faith Dialogue and Peaceful Co-existence at the University of Sapienza, Italy

Overview

The Kingdom of Bahrain places great emphasis on establishing the foundations of citizenship, social justice, and promoting noble human values by respecting human rights and fundamental freedoms, regardless of gender, origin, religion, or sect.

Based on this perspective, the Kingdom strives to promote the values of tolerance, peaceful coexistence, peace, and the rejection of division and divisive religious or racial conflicts. It seeks to enhance dialogue among different religions and civilizations. As a result, the Kingdom of Bahrain has become a global model in the field of religious and racial tolerance and coexistence among all individuals.

The Kingdom of Bahrain possesses a unique experience in the field of religious freedoms, allowing the practice of religious rituals for all religions and their various sects. This serves as a confirmation that the spirit of affinity, love, and friendship has been and will continue to be evident among the different segments of the Bahraini people, including residents from diverse backgrounds. This is evidenced by the historical coexistence in the country.

The Kingdom has always been keen on consolidating the values and principles of religious tolerance, national unity, and peaceful coexistence among all religions, sects, and segments of society. This is achieved through various media outlets, as well as the implementation of initiatives and educational and awareness programs to promote diversity, cultural convergence, and the condemnation of incitement to hatred, sectarianism, violence, and terrorism in all its forms.

Throughout the country, there are numerous mosques and churches, a Jewish synagogue in the center of Manama, which was built in 1930, and a Hindu temple, along with many places of worship for other denominations. Everyone practices their religious rituals within a framework of constructive coexistence among different religions, sects, and diverse beliefs.

Bahrain’s Declaration of Peaceful Coexistence

Given the sanctity of religion, the constitutional legislator has guaranteed this right and explicitly affirmed freedom of conscience in Article 22 of the Constitution of the Kingdom of Bahrain, which states: "Freedom of conscience is absolute".

The State guarantees the inviolability of places of worship, freedom to perform religious rituals, processions, and religious gatherings in accordance with established customs in the country."

The Kingdom of Bahrain hosted a historic visit by His Holiness Pope Francis, the head of the Roman Catholic Church, during November 2022. The Bahrain Declaration for Dialogue, "East and West: Towards Human Coexistence," was held as part of the first session of the Bahrain Dialogue Forum. The announcement was also made regarding the establishment of the "King Hamad International Award for Dialogue and Peaceful Coexistence."
