Ministry of Foreign Affairs organises round table on Bahrain’s Security Council candidacy

On the sidelines of the Diplomatic Forum 2024, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs organised a round table on the Kingdom of Bahrain’s candidacy for the Security Council. Discussions were led by the first Bahraini ambassador to hold the position the United Nations General Assembly President at its sixty-first session, Ambassador Shaikha Haya bint Rashid Al Khalifa, former Permanent Representative of the Kingdom of Bahrain to the United Nations in New York, Ambassador Dr. Jassim Mohammed Bualai, the Permanent Representative of the Kingdom of Bahrain to the United Nations in New York, Ambassador Jamal Faris Al-Ruwaie, and moderated the Chief of Strategic Affairs, Ambassador Nancy Abdullah Jamal.

Ambassador Shaikha Haya reviewed the role of the United Nations in preventing conflicts and preserving international peace and security. She also briefed the audience on her experience as President of the UNGA.

For his part, Ambassador Dr. Bualai reviewed his diplomatic experience during his tenure as the Permanent Representative of the Kingdom to the UN, at a time when the Kingdom won a non-permanent seat in the UN Security Council for the years 1998-1999, followed by its membership in the UN Economic and Social Council for the years 2000-2003.

In turn, Ambassador Al-Ruwaie touched on the issue of Security Council reform in his capacity as coordinator of the Arab Group in New York, and the efforts being made in this regard. He also briefed the attendees on the Kingdom's candidacy for non-permanent membership in the Security Council for the years 2026-2027, and the steps taken in this regard.

The event concluded by a broader discussion with Bahrain's ambassadors and consuls abroad as well as ministry officials.
